verybody loves Monopoly. The classic family board game is one of the most popular pastimes of the modern era, having entertained families around the world for more than seven decades now. It's a staple in virtually every home, an icon of childhood right up there with the Barbie doll and the Tonka truck. In recent years, the game has become more popular than ever. Milton Bradley has branched out, offering new and varied perspectives on the old favourite. I even saw an inflatable version of the original in department stores this summer, just perfect for those long days lounging by the pool.
Monopoly Tycoon is the latest twist. Development house Deep Red and publisher Infogrames have teamed up to rework the familiar into something different, turning the simple hotels and houses concept into a full-blown economic simulator. While your main objective is still to earn a fortune and force your competitors out of business, you now do so by building real businesses and catering to the finicky consumer market. Rolling dice and the luck of the draw have nothing on proper planning and the ruthless desire to suck as much money out of the economy as possible. It's a long way from your grandfather's Monopoly.
