erived from the 911, the 959 was a huge evolutionary step in Porsche's quest for performance excellence in production cars. The 959 ran a twin-turbocharged, 2.85 flat-six engine that generated an astonishing 450 hp. Utilizing a Kevlar-composite body to reduce weight (3452 lbs, or 1566 kg), 0-60 mph was reached in 3.7 seconds. Top speed was an amazing 196 mph, or 315 kmh.
The 959 was Porsche's first major effort to create an all-wheel drive production car. It led the way for the Carrera 4 which was introduced a few years later in 1988. The 4 wheel independent suspension featured shift console-mounted controls for adjusting ride height and shock absorber damping. The front of the car featured functional air intakes, while the rear sported an integrally mounted wing, which applied the necessary downforce at speeds over 48 mph.
The 959 made it's mark in the rally world in 1986 by placing 1st, 2nd and 6th in the gruelling 22-day Paris-Dakar. To this day the 959 is one of the most sought after Porsche's, due to it's limited production run of only 292 ever being made...
